Your heart has carried you your whole life. It has pumped for you, felt for you, protected you, expressed for you, held on and let go for you, enlivened you, encouraged you, held grief for you, and enabled you to love. The heart is the conduit between all that is personal and all that is Universal. Consider how the lungs are the inlet and intermediary between our personal air and the ocean of air we call the sky. In just this way, the heart is the inlet and intermediary between our individual soul, the portion of Spirit we steward while here on Earth, and the ocean of all Spirit. In this guided journaling practice, Mark Nepo invites us to look at our heart in new ways, reflect on what we see, and record our experience in an ongoing journaling journey.

Mark Nepo is a poet and spiritual adviser who has taught in the fields of poetry and spirituality for over 40 years. He has a doctorate in English and taught for 18 years at SUNY Albany. In his 30s he was diagnosed with a rare form of lymphoma, a struggle which helped to form his philosophy of experiencing life fully while staying in relationship to an unknowable future. He has published 21 books and recorded fifteen audio projects. His new book, Drinking from the River of Light: The Life of Expression is just out from Sounds True. In 2010 Oprah Winfrey chose Nepo's Book of Awakening as one of her Ultimate Favorite Things, launching it to the #1 spot on the New York Times bestseller list.
