Formation of Spiritual Identity

By Dr. Pramila Srivastava

At some point of time, each of us cultivates into thinking about a persona which we live. It is the self-consciousness with is pressured by external forces. The human beings are themselves the spiritual beings who can possibly raise their identities by experience. Developing spiritual identity is a process which works lifelong without any predictable pattern. There is always a spiritual alliance between self and divine happening around us. The spiritual identity shapes for human to have continuous connection with divine. Divine connection collaborate our thoughts to gather the power to connect with a higher, an unknown. The aims of being compassionate flourish through unique associations and experiences with spirituality.

The Human self is believed to have both personal and collective identity. Collective identity is formed with part of one’s idea of self that is derived from the attitude towards association in a social group along with the values attached to the member of society. Collective identities may fluctuate over time and social situations. While the personal identities are one part of collective self. Identities are in the form of roles in society life mother, daughter, teacher or son. Both the collective and personal identities are created with cognitive components of beliefs, dogmas and typical traits. There are also affective components like commitment, devotedness, values and component of behaviour like religious favour. There is often an inevitable connection is formed between spiritual and religion. Religion altogether is the system of rituals, practices and symbols made to show closeness towards sacred high power: God. Some consider religious values as a path to attain spirituality. There is need to track on an institutionalised religion. One may just trust the feelings and classify different values he has gained to seek spirituality. Sometimes the spiritual person does not even aware of what he has achieved or expanded the consciousness in larger context.

The Spiritual Identity consists of unique characteristics of spirituality but not directly related to religion. An individual chose to comprehend the spiritual identity as a preferred personal identity that might not have the aspects of collective identity. Spiritual identity can be categorized as personal identity which is formed with personal opinions, behaviours concerning the divine. The interest lies here is in the evolving pathways related with the emergence of the individual identity aspects of one’s spiritual identity. Like, at which point of time and how do one grow its personal spiritual identity and why is the process take place. There is spiritual development process occurring from childhood to adulthood. Some psychological theories suggest that in new-borns there is no difference between self and other and they are in the state of oneness. The youth shows the shifts in their identity which is based on their fluctuating temperament.

The religious, gender, social categories has an impact on spiritual identity formation. The development is procedural, starting from conventional ritual to introspections. The transcendent spiritual identity forms a budding gateway to optimistic communal revolution toward the planet. Also any transcendent spiritual identity should not be restrained exclusively by individual outcomes on social, environment concerns. The realisation of going beyond the regular stimulates to move advanced level of ego. The spiritual identity can also be roused by family, contemplative education, intense connection with the sacred and experiences of nature. Some people approach life with a spiritual sense by praying to God, thanking Him for whatever they have, which is a completely a path towards symbolic spiritual identity. The culture today allows creating a persona of the choice but still some feel the frustration inside them. Anyone should not just follow any image rather than focussing more of what one can relate to and through that expresses more in the life. For the spiritual development the inner self is deeply enclosed with something superior than the self. Humans have core impulse to search for the meaning, reason, self- transcendence and the spiritual development occurs both outside and inside of the religious customs.

The belief of having a developmental mechanism in spiritual identity growth is personal skill with the transcendent. The opportunity for such experiences mostly happens when one goes through religious involvement. But this is not always the case as one can form the spiritual identity by performing the silent meditation, yoga; as there is multidimensional nature of spiritual identity. This creation of spiritual identity may guide in empowering to certain level of maturity. One has its own personal quest for gaining the ultimate meaning about the life and association with the transcendent which has no compulsory connection with religion.

A healthy spiritual identity is designed after speculation of thoughts and of floating doubts. Since healthy spiritual identity is created with deliberate beliefs, adapting values; an individual where agrees with the educators without any hesitation, a sense of satisfaction is created. One may endorse tolerance, motivates others to form spiritual identity apart from personal identity.
